Climbing experiences & Skills
for the mountains
Welcome
Roam Mountains is a small outdoor company run by Rebecca Coles. We specialise in instruction tailored to your ambitions and bespoke guiding in the mountains. With our experience in pioneering expeditions in the Greater Ranges and the Alps, we approach UK trips with a similar unique and off-the-beaten track philosophy, as well as a wealth of knowledge to help you train and develop skills for expeditions and climbing trips around the world.
A note for winter 2025/2026; this winter I’ll be working in Antarctica but courses will return in May 2026.
Testimonials
“Took a roped scrambling course in Snowdonia with Roam Mountains. Spent the day with a great mountain guide, picked up some good rope skills knowledge, and more importantly had a really enjoyable day out in the mountains. I would definitely recommend.”
“I was fortunate to do a learn to lead trad climbing course with Rebecca and her associates for 5 days this summer. Rebecca is a really knowledgeable instructor, who covered everything we needed to learn to be able to lead climb trad routes. I felt very at ease on this course and felt very safe at all times. Rebecca was also happy to show me extra things I wanted to learn and enabled me to practice all my new skills so I felt confident and safe going out and climbing following the course. I would highly recommend any course with Rebecca / Roam Mountains!”
“Becky provided a super professional service. She was friendly and welcoming. Her experience came through in her clear and easy to understand explanations. Already looking to book further trips with her. Highly recommended.”

Build the skills and confidence you need to enjoy the mountains in winter.
Our 2 day Winter Skills Course on the WEST COAST OF SCOTLAND is designed for people who want to develop their winter mountain walking skills and become more confident travelling through snow and ice-covered mountain terrain. Whether you're new to winter or looking to refresh and consolidate your skills, we'll give you the practical tools to make informed decisions and move safely in the mountains.
Over the course, we'll cover essential winter techniques including ice axe and crampon skills, moving safely on steep snow, cutting steps, winter navigation, route choice, avalanche awareness and what to do in the event of a slip or fall. We'll also look at equipment, clothing, mountain weather and the factors that influence winter conditions.
The emphasis is on hands-on learning and building real-world confidence. You'll have plenty of opportunity to practise techniques in the mountains, with guidance tailored to your experience and the conditions on the day.
You'll learn:
How to use an ice axe and crampons effectively
Safe movement on snow-covered terrain
Self-arrest and techniques for stopping a slide
Winter navigation and route planning
Understanding snow conditions and avalanche awareness
Winter route choice and decision making
How to prepare for a day in the winter mountains
Mountain safety, emergency skills and risk management
No previous winter experience is required, although a reasonable level of summer mountain fitness is recommended.
The aim isn't simply to teach you a set of techniques, but to help you develop the judgement, awareness and confidence to make good decisions in the winter mountains.
Based from Fort William.
Conditions and itinerary will vary depending on weather, snow and avalanche conditions, and the course will be adapted to make the most of what the mountains give us on the day.
