Kit List

Kit List for a Winter Skills/Walking Course

Please make sure you have the following kit.

Scottish winter conditions can be wet, windy and cold, so the correct kit is essential for you to get the most out of your course. Also remember that correct kit is different from expensive kit.

Essential Clothing & Equipment:

Winter Boots* – A boot suitable for a crampon. B2 or B3 boots are the most suitable.

Gaiters – if boots don’t already have gaiters

Crampons* – Mountaineering crampons (C2) are best but Walking crampons (C1) will suffice for this course, fitted to your boots. Climbing crampons (C3) are unsuitable for this course.

Ice axe* – An axe suitable for walking/mountaineering

Helmet^

Daysack (approx 30-40l) – Suitable for carrying all layers and crampons and ice axe.

Waterproof Jacket – must have a good hood.

Waterproof Trousers – these are essential (please don't just bring a waterproof jacket).

Clothing:

Avoid all cotton and down clothing. Any sort of wool clothing is good and synthetic fabrics found in specific outdoor and sports clothing are also good.

You will also need a good base layer and versatile layers. Typically, I wear fleece trousers and start with my waterproof trousers on. Then, I have a long sleeve base layer, one or two thin fleeces and a softshell jacket. In winter, layers need to be versatile, think sweat management, you are aiming to stay as dry as possible so might start in less whilst walking uphill and add layers as higher and colder on the hill.

Synthetic-type jacket - as a warm emergency layer.

Warm hat – without a bobble which can be worn under a helmet.

Gloves - (min 3 pairs) lightweight to thick.

Goggles – a ski type pair of goggles.

All spare clothing should be waterproofed in 'dry' bags.

Headtorch

Water bottle &/or flask – ability to carry approx. 1 litre of water.

Lunch & snacks – Please have a suitable lunch and snacks for the day.

Personal medication & small blister kit

Optional kit:

Walking poles – they must be collapsible so that they can be stowed when an ice axe is used. They are most useful if fitted with snow baskets.

Map & compass – the leader will be carrying these but it’s always useful to have more in the group.

*Can be hired locally at Ellis Brigham in Fort William

^I can provide a limited amount of these but require prior notice

Equipment PROVIDED:

This equipment will be provided and carried in the group. You may be asked to help carry some of this equipment so please make sure your bag has some spare space.
