Are you an indoor climber who wants to try sport climbing? or a climber heading off on your first sport climbing trip? This course is for you.

This one day course is suitable for beginners or those transitioning from indoor to outdoor climbing. It includes technical skills, practical sessions, and safety advice throughout.

On this course you’ll learn about the sport climbing environment and how to stay safe and feel confident climbing routes.

The course will be held at a local sport crag and will involve climbing some routes at a grade people are comfortable at.

The course covers the following:

  • Sport crag etiquette and access

  • Kit and equipment including ropes, quick draws, clipsticks and belay devices.

  • Crag safety from awareness of other climbers, assessing rock and bolt quality in different environments

  • Use of guidebooks and grading system and selecting routes

  • Lead belaying

  • Lead climbing a route safely and efficiently including clipping bots and the rope in the quickdraw

  • Rethreading/cleaning an anchor including various different sorts of anchors

  • Simple problem solving

  • For this course you’ll need to have done some indoor or outdoor climbing before and have lead belayed a climber.

  • You will need to bring with you the following:

    • Climbing shoes

    • Lunch and drink for the day

    • Suitable clothing to climb in

    • A rucksack to carry kit to the crag.

    You can bring the following items with you if you own them already or borrow them for the day:

    • Helmet

    • Harness

    • Belay device and carabiner

    The following is supplied as part of the course:

    • Ropes

    • Quickdraws

    • Specific sport climbing kit like a clip stick

    • Emergency group equipment such as a first aid kit.

    A full kit list is sent prior to the course.

  • The course is for up to 4 people per instructor

  • We will meet at the Caban Cafe, Brynrefail LL55 3NR (near Llanberis) at 9am on the first day of the course.

    In case of bad weather we will find relevant skills and activities at low level.

    We try to stay outside but may suggest going to an indoor wall if it will provide a better learning environment. Climbing wall fees are not included.

    If a participant cancels between 4 and 2 weeks before the course 50% can be refunded. If less than 2 weeks no refund is given.

    We recommend taking insurance to cover unforeseen events like illness.
